Students will explore pottery and create a 3 dimensional vessel with their hands using clay. We will play with clay and learn demonstrated slab building techniques to create a cup or a vase. Students are encouraged to get curious and use their imagination to create a surface pattern or impression using stamps and textured materials.
*A second class could also be added the next day for students to paint their vessels with underglaze paint. Student work will be taken back to my studio to be fired and glazed a solid colour in approx. two-three weeks.

Amberley Cooke of Kin Work Pottery is a ceramic artist, based in Whitehorse. She began her pottery journey in 2016. Creating hand built pottery, using rolled out slabs of clay to create functional pottery has been Amberley’s main focus and passion. The slow, mindful construction allows for exploration of texture and surface design. Amberley’s pottery is inspired by surface design, fabric prints, vivid colours and the impression of textures. Her work is made in small batches, often one-of-a-kind with a touch of whimsy, in her northern studio. Her work has been exhibited at the Arts Underground gallery and she sells her work on Etsy as well as at local Yukon markets, such as the Fireweed 12 Days of Christmas Market. Currently, Amberley also works as the Ceramic studio manager for a community non-profit and is an active member of Yukon Arts Society.
Amberley is a pottery instructor and passionate in sharing her knowledge to make ceramics more accessible in the north. In addition to being a ceramics instructor at Arts Underground Community Studio, Amberley has instructed private pottery classes and workshops and organized and run pottery retreats. She has worked with students of all ages. Having grown up in small northern communities, Amberley is keen to work in rural settings. Her fun, casual and open style makes it easy for students to connect, creating an environment where students are comfortable and confident to explore their interests. This allows for a truly student-led learning experience. “I love creating with my hands and the problem solving and critical thinking opportunities that working with clay offers. I want to make pottery more accessible to kids by giving them the chance to get their hands muddy, have fun, and explore their creativity.”
