Artist in Residence Program

Helen O’Connor • Multidisciplinary Art Projects

Artist-in-Residence Extended Project

Duration: One Week (40 hours)

Artist Helen O’Connor will set up an interactive studio space in your school for a week. The studio will have equipment for papermaking, collage, painting, and printmaking. In that time, she will become a lively part of your school community as she meets with classes, small groups, and individuals to create a whole school project. Teachers can sign up in her weekly schedule for predesignated times that their class can experience the studio, learn techniques, create, and participate in the project. Students, staff, and parents are encouraged to come to Open Studio sessions offered at selected lunch times, after school or evening.

Whole School Environmental Papermaking Project choices:

  • Recycled Papermaking - using school recycled paper and shredded documents students will make a pulp to create cards, envelopes and small works of art. These could be sold individually or in packs for fundraising or used as special occasion and thank you cards.
  • Paper from Plants – using local wild plants and/or invasive plant species students will learn about environmental stewardship while making beautiful organic handmade paper. This paper can be used for small book works, calligraphy, or other art projects such as collage and printmaking.
  • Paper Sculpture – using recycled objects, clothing and paper, students will create fantastical costumes and sculpture.
  • Pulp Painting Mural Project – using pigmented recycled paper pulp students will contribute to a large colourful paper mural mosaic.
