100 Dresses Residency/ Encaustic Workshop with Nicole Bauberger

Nicole Bauberger • Painting - Encaustic

Nicole is interested in carrying out “100 Dresses” projects in various Yukon communities. If you have a room in your school where she could set up the tools for painting in melted beeswax, this might be of interest to you. This can take various formats. 1. Full project – it takes Nicole about 2 weeks to paint her own 100 Dresses. If she could have weekend access to the school, Nicole could be in your school for 10 school days, or maybe a little more, and ideally the residency would culminate in a show of her paintings as well as those painted by the students. The Artists in Schools program would only be charged for the time she actually spends teaching students, but students could come and talk with her and observe an artist creating an art project in their own school. Ideally, students would come and paint with Nicole, and between them paint a second 100 Dresses of their own. Educators find this artwork useful for teaching inference as a literacy strategy. Nicole would also be well placed to offer other visual art, creative writing and storytelling programming if that would suit your needs. 2. Smaller format: In this case, Nicole would just come into the school and work with students until the students had painted 100 Dresses, not undertaking her own 100. She could accommodate 12 at a time, and it would take about two hours per group. 3. Even smaller: A workshop in encaustic painting, painting in beeswax. It’s fun and can be used to teach changes of state, the elements of composition, and many other things. A class could come and try this for as short a time as one hour, but a full day is required due to extensive setup and takedown.

Nicole Bauberger

Nicole Bauberger is a storyteller, painter, sculptor, writer and arts educator. Teaching and learning live close to the heart of her art practice. She educated herself mostly through collaborations and apprenticeships with other artists. She had the blessing of a learning friendship with Mrs. Annie Smith of the Kwanlin Dün First Nation which continues with Annie’s family today. Nicole loves to bring what she has learned in these relationships into schools, continuing to learn from collaborative adventures with students. For four years she created murals with students in Ontario High Schools through the Ontario Artists in Education Program. Her work can be seen out in the community and at the Yukon Artists @ Work Gallery.
