Introduction to Comics Creation with Jessica Prentice

The medium of comics is an exciting, accessible, and near-limitless tool for fostering student self-expression and creativity. This program serves as an introduction; longer or more intermediate versions of the course are available upon request. This mini-course in comics creation includes an introduction to visual language and conventions of the medium; character design and development exercises; tips and activities for plot development and setting; and how to lay out a comics page. In the final two sessions, students will create their own two-page comic utilizing the skills they have learned.

5, 1-hour sessions (custom program lengths available)

Material Required:

Printer paper, pencils, rulers, black pens for inking (to be supplied by schools). Handouts provided by artist at minimal cost to school.

Jessica Prentice

Jessica Prentice loves to share her passion for the comic arts. She is a founding organizer of YukomiCon, Yukon’s comic convention, and has organized or led myriad comics-based community events, including Drink n’ Draw nights at the Deck, the 12 Hour Comic Book Challenge, and teen comics programming at Whitehorse Public Library. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in literature and is currently undertaking a Master of Fine Arts in Comics Illustration.
